Sadly, no definitive pictures or video have yet emerged of the crash that claimed Lance Armstrong's celebrated collarbone, but as predicted, his Twitter account is on the case with the necessary updates. Armstrong got caught up in a scrum about 12.5 miles from the finish of the first stage of the "Vuelta of Castilla and Leon" near Baltanas, Spain, yesterday. As the road narrowed, a couple of cyclists in the lead pack crashed, taking Armstrong down with them, breaking his right collarbone and possibly aborting his cycling comeback before it ever really got started. Emma Hayes, having watched Wolfsburg knock Chelsea out of the Champions League in three consecutive seasons from 2016-18, would be forgiven for ruing a draw that has paired them together in the competition again. Instead, Hayes is “looking forward” to seeing how her side fare in the quarter-final against their old foes.

“I think everybody would say the same,” the manager said before Wednesday’s first leg in Budapest. “I’m looking forward to watching [my side] cope with playing against a team that has won, every time, in the biggest games against us, and I’m extremely curious to see how far we’ve progressed in the last three years.”

The images of Alexia Putellas clutching the Ballon d’Or trophy for the second successive year, becoming the first female player to do so since the introduction of the women’s award in 2018, were poignant.

Poignant first because Putellas was standing there with the ACL injury that crushed her Euro 2022 dream and will keep her out for much of this season. And poignant also because, although injury meant she was not a signatory of the statement from 15 Spain players that said the national team environment was affecting their emotional state and health, she is the talisman of the team, has expressed support for her teammates and was clutching the trophy for them as much as for herself.
